Turner spoke to several student groups throughout the day, including members of the Strickland Women’s LIFT Fellowship Program, which provides networking, leadership, development, mentoring and coaching for female students interested in leadership positions. She shared three things she wished she had known before entering the workforce.

“The three truths that will ruin your career are mastering relationships, navigating landmines, and self-development,” Turner said. “The most important decisions in your life are made when you are not in the room. You need someone in the room to stand up for you. Your relationships will ultimately decide how far you go.”

Senior Julia Velasquez, a neuroscientist major who is part of the first LIFT scholarship program for Strickland women, says she feels better prepared to enter the job market after hearing Turner speak.

“I always learn something new from her after each visit,” Velasquez said. “My biggest takeaway from her conversation with LIFT was the idea of responding to what she describes as ‘landmines or unexpected situations’ in the workplace with a teachable spirit and resilience. The Access to Innovators Program is so unique at HPU and one of the reasons I chose to attend this university.”

In another seminar for all students, she discussed the six Cs for mastering the interview, whether for an internship or for a job.

  • Character: How your values align with those of the organization and always tell the truth.
  • Competence: Your ability to do whatever the company needs to do.
  • Chemistry: Bringing strengths to bear and influencing the group’s outcome. Make sure you look your best on interview day.
  • Conscientiousness: Prepare for your interview.
  • Curiosity: Prepare for your interview with three to four great questions.
  • Courtesy: Write a thank you note and send a thank you email.

“I want you to be prepared for a good interview, and that includes asking behavioral questions,” Turner said. “Past performance is the best indicator of future performance. The behavior question will ask you to tell a story or give an example of when you did something. Look at your resume, skills and experience, and I want you to be prepared to give specific examples of what you’ve learned in the past.”

The students asked many questions during the event and took away many tips for future job interviews.

“There were a lot of things that she talked about that I never really thought about when I was interviewed,” said Parker Nyboer, a freshman biochemistry major from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. “Attending events like this will be of great help when I am looking to apply for internships, graduate schools and especially a research program abroad in Germany that I am planning to apply for.”
